Living in Central Florida provides some unique challenges that Osceola County residents need to prepare for, such as severe thunderstorms and even hurricanes, to protect their investments.  In addition to your home preparations and personal safety you should also prepare your swimming pool area. The duration and severity of the storm will determine which tips you should implement. Here are a few tips to help minimize the storm’s affect on your pool.

  1. Cut the Power – You’ll want to turn off the electric power at the circuit breaker panel to your pool’s equipment (pump motors, lighting, chlorinators, and heaters).
  2. Secure Loose Items – Chairs, tables, umbrellas and toys can become airborne projectiles in high winds and should be stored inside if possible. Only place patio furniture in the pool as a last resort and do so gently so you don’t damage the pool’s interior finish.
  3. Protect Equipment – In very bad weather with high winds such as a hurricane it maybe necessary to protect your pump motor, time clock, electric heaters by wrapping them with a waterproof plastic and tie securely.
  4. Leave Water in the Pool – Pools are designed with adequate drainage. The pool’s water provides weight to hold the pool in the ground when there’s extreme lift pressure from excessive ground water.
  5. Add Extra Chlorine – Add a shock liquid or granular chlorine to prevent contamination from debris and storm water.
  6. Protect Your Screen Enclosure – You may want to consider removing screen panels on opposite ends of your enclosure to promote air flow and help relieve pressure from the wind. You can usually remove these panels by pulling out the vinyl spine that holds the panels in place.  Make sure the enclosure’s restraining cables are tight and in good condition and the bottom fasteners or bolts have not rusted away.
