This is a question we receive quite often at Osceola Aquatics. Should I drain off water from my pool when it goes above my skimmer level?

Of course, we don’t hear that as often in the winter months in Osceola County as we do currently of the year, and especially during the summer months, but it’s something every important for every pool owner to understand.

High water levels in pools can most certainly damage pool pumps and cause inefficient and unsatisfactory cleaning results. The type of skimmer you have actual has a lot to do with a pool that may be over filled. Some skimmers have a floating door in the opening which can allow for debris to get sucked into the skimmer when the pool is shut off. When the pool is off the door of the skimmer then closes, covering the opening which causes debris to stay in the skimmer. At times the door gets stuck in the closed position when debris wedges itself along the side and keeps it from opening. Some skimmers have floating weirs that sit inside of the skimmer basket and float up and down. If the water level is too high the floating weir is too short to stay in the opening of basket and it gets stuck sideways which blocks the skimmer. Quite often we remove the floating weir and make sure the skimmer door opens and closes freely. The proper level for the water in your pool is at the middle of skimmer, so with the varying weather we experience in Osceola County keep an eye on it. If you can drain your pool down when the level is too high, it’s a good idea to do so.

Keep in mind that in the summer evaporation is at its highest and so typically the pool levels take care of themselves. We don’t normally drain down the pools we service in the summer months, but we always monitor levels to protect the pool and the pool equipment from damage.

On the flip side of the coin, when the water level is below the skimmer intake – the motor will lose prime and continue to run, causing damage to the pump from overheating and to the PVC plumping connections from both heat and vibration. Repairing or replacing your pool pump can be expensive, and re-plumbing the PVC can also be both expensive and time consuming.
