As a resident of Central Florida, severe thunderstorms and hurricanes are part of living in the Sunshine State. We shared tips on how best to prepare your pool investment in our article, “Calm Before The Storm – Preparing Your Pool.”  Once the threat has passed and it’s safe to go outside, it’s time to assess your pool and surroundings for any damage. Here is a checklist of five tips to get you started.

  1. Remove Debris – It is important that you remove debris either by hand, rake or net before attempting to use the pool’s vacuum system.
  2. Examine Equipment – Remove any protective plastic and check to see that the equipment is dry and there’s no physical damage before turning the circuit breaker on and priming the pump filter.
  3. Clean the Filter – Be sure to run the system 24 hours a day until the water has reached proper clarity. You can then reset your timer for a normal cycle.
  4. Add Chlorine – Add a shock dose of liquid or granular chlorine to prevent contamination from debris and storm water.
  5. Balance the Chemistry – Adjust the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and conditioner levels. Adjust as necessary over the next few days.

It’s important to closely observe your pool’s operation over the next several days. Taking these precautionary steps will ensure that your pool is operating properly after the storm. If you believe your pool has sustained damage due to excess debris, you should call Osceola Aquatics for professional advice on next steps.
